New Tree Instructions
How to establish your trees and when to call your Arborist.
Native and Drought Tolerant Trees
- For the first 10 days following planting, water tree(s) daily with a hose for at least 5 minutes or 10-20 gallons of water. Do not allow water to drain away from the tree(s) and be sure to water below the drip line, usually about a 2-4 foot diameter around the trunk or wherever there is mulch.
- 11-20 days following planting you may reduce watering frequency to every 2 days.
- 21-30 days following planting you may reduce watering frequency to every 4 days.
- After the tree has been in the ground for 30 days you may reduce watering frequency to a weekly basis. If the tree was planted during the late spring or summer, continue this watering frequency until temperatures fall below a 90 degree Fahrenheit average.
- If tree was planted during cooler weather then you may reduce watering frequency to every 2 weeks, 31-365 days after planting, maintaining the 10-20 gallons of water at a time. Be sure to stop all watering 2-3 weeks before a frost or Monsoon forecast.
- Monitor your tree(s) for signs of distress and call your Arborist immediately if you have followed all above requirements and are still seeing unusual or unhealthy growth, i.e. wilted/yellow leaves or unusual bark color.
Citrus and Fruit Trees
- Follow steps 1-5 for Native and Drought Tolerant Trees.
- After Citrus/Fruit tree has been in the ground through the summer months you may reduce watering to every 4 weeks in the winter when temperatures fall below an 85 degree Fahrenheit average.
- Cover newly planted Citrus/Fruit tree with a cotton sheet or frost-cloth over night when temperatures are expected to fall below 35 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Monitor your tree(s) for signs of distress and call your Arborist immediately if you have followed all above requirements and are still seeing unusual or unhealthy growth, i.e. wilted/yellow leaves, discolored bark or if you have not had any flower production within 1 year after planting.
